Scouring is the process of removing contaminants such as grease, suint, dirt, and dust from the fiber and detergents play a crucial role in this process.
A detergent is simply soap with any number and type of additives (called builder).
Builders make soap work better. They allow it to work in a much greater range of water types and prevent the formation of insoluble precipitates in hard water.
The most commonly used additives are synthetic surfactants and degreasers that actively pull away grease and dirt, suspending it in water until it can be washed away. These additives allow detergents to be used at much lower temperatures than soaps and require less water to rinse.
